Academic Lead Teacher, Math – Middle/High School

About the role

The International Rescue Committee is seeking an Academic Lead Teacher (ALT) in Mathematics for its Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA). This six‑week program supports newly arrived refugee students (ages 5‑21) across grades 6‑12, helping them meet New York State learning standards while fostering social‑emotional growth.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in instructional planning sessions, trainings, and all program meetings.
• Design culturally responsive, trauma‑informed lesson plans for 15‑25 multilingual learners per class.
• Prepare and submit daily lesson plans, slide decks, and worksheets in advance of instruction.
• Administer formative and summative assessments, including pre‑assessments, to guide curriculum design.
• Monitor student progress, maintain evidence of learning (work samples), and complete required reports on time.
• Serve as a classroom focal point for peer mentors, guiding them to support student learning and well‑being.
• Provide substitute coverage for colleagues as needed.

Required profile

• Experience teaching mathematics to middle and high school students, preferably in multilingual or refugee contexts.
• Ability to plan differentiated, trauma‑informed instruction using a sheltered instructional approach for English Language Learners.
• Commitment to fostering students’ social‑emotional development and building a supportive community.
• Collaboration skills to work with fellow NYSA teachers and the Dean of Instruction.
