About the role

The Student Instructor for Outdoor Adventures supports Recreational Sports by creating a safe, healthy, and engaging environment for participants. This work‑study position offers hands‑on experience leading outdoor activities while earning academic credit.

Key responsibilities

• Coach large groups and lead instructional outdoor events, providing effective feedback.
• Teach educational classes and in‑field programs, ensuring safety and high‑quality customer service.
• Assist daily operations such as inventory management, equipment cleaning, and maintenance.
• Plan and lead bike‑along sessions in varied environments and weather conditions.
• Implement emergency protocols and other safety procedures for Outdoor Adventures programming.
• Mentor new instructors, communicating guidelines and best practices.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by Recreational Sports staff.

Required profile

• Enrolled at least half‑time (6 credit hours for undergraduates, 3 for graduates).
• Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate).
• Current, complete file with the Office of Financial Aid and annual FAFSA submission demonstrating financial need.
• U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible non‑citizen with an alien registration number.
• Comply with Texas A&M International University’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.

Required skills

• Knowledge of a variety of outdoor equipment and proper usage.
• Strong outdoor leadership abilities, including teaching, presentation, planning, and organization.
• Regional familiarity with local outdoor venues and resources.
• Excellent customer‑service skills and ability to enforce safety protocols.
• Capability to guide participants in proper biking technique and adapt instruction for varying fitness levels.
• Professional demeanor: punctuality, appropriate dress, and positive attitude.
