Wildland Firefighter / Ranger – Georgia Forestry Commission

About the role

The Georgia Forestry Commission is seeking motivated individuals to join its elite wildland firefighting team in the Telfair/Wheeler region. This position involves protecting Georgia’s forest resources through fire suppression, prevention, and emergency response.

Key responsibilities

• Respond to wildland fire incidents and conduct suppression operations.
• Perform fire prevention activities, including public education and fuel reduction.
• Maintain and operate firefighting equipment and vehicles.
• Collaborate with team members and other agencies during multi‑hazard incidents.
• Travel to and work within a 45‑minute radius of the assigned location.

Required profile

• Willingness to live or relocate within 45 minutes of the work site.
• Ability to work in high‑adrenaline, physically demanding environments.
• Self‑directed decision‑making skills and strong teamwork orientation.
• Successful completion of background check, medical evaluation, and physical fitness testing.

Required skills

• Class A CDL learner’s permit (CLP) prior to hire and ability to obtain a CDL within 12 weeks.
• Pass the Moderate Work Capacity Test (2‑mile hike with 25‑lb pack) and annual fitness assessments.
