Water Utility Worker – Installation & Maintenance

About the role

The Water Utility Worker is responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, replacement, and repair of the city’s water distribution infrastructure. This position supports safe and reliable delivery of potable water to residents and businesses.

Key responsibilities

• Install, maintain, operate, replace, and repair water mains, services, fire hydrants, water meters, and associated valves and equipment.
• Work on potable water supply and distribution pipelines, including trunk lines of 6 inches or larger.
• Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance to ensure system integrity.
• Respond to emergency service calls and restore service promptly.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.

Required profile

• Minimum 18 months full‑time paid experience installing and operating/maintaining potable water services and distribution pipelines (6" or larger) and related valves.
• Experience may be obtained in civilian employment or while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
• Valid Class B (or Class A) driver’s license issued by the California DMV.
• Ability to obtain a California State Water Resources Control Board Distribution Operator Grade D2 certificate, if required.

Required skills

• Installation of potable water mains and trunk lines.
• Operation and maintenance of water service valves and equipment.
• Knowledge of water distribution system standards and safety procedures.
