Water Treatment Operator I

About the role

The Water Treatment Operator I is responsible for operating and maintaining equipment in water distribution and treatment facilities to ensure water quality meets permit and operational requirements. This role involves hands‑on work, routine maintenance, and monitoring of process controls.

Key responsibilities

• Perform manual labor such as filling and emptying machine bins, cleaning equipment, and installing lines and meters.
• Carry out routine preventive maintenance, lubrication, and minor adjustments on plant equipment.
• Operate vehicles for plant operational and system maintenance purposes.
• Monitor flow meters, gauges, pressures, and programmable logic control (PLC) panels, recording observations in shift logs.
• Diagnose basic operational problems, report malfunctions, and take corrective actions per procedures.
• Operate and tend pumps, generators, valves, mixers, conveyors, blowers, chemical feed systems, and vacuum filters.
• Conduct field tests (chemical, physical, biological) and adjust chemical dosages for process control.
• Sample water, prepare chemical solutions, service automatic samplers, and monitor chemical supplies.
• Perform routine laboratory tests and calibrate portable meters (dissolved oxygen, pH, percent oxygen, lower explosive limit).

• Capability to follow safety and environmental disposal policies.
• Attention to detail for monitoring and recording process parameters.
• Basic problem‑solving skills to diagnose and correct operational issues.
• Willingness to assist in other plant areas as needed.

Required skills

• Operation of programmable logic control (PLC) systems.
• Instrument calibration for dissolved oxygen, pH, percent oxygen, and lower explosive limit meters.
• Water sampling and field testing (chemical, physical, biological).
• Preparation of chemical solutions and management of chemical feed supplies.
• Basic mechanical maintenance and minor equipment adjustments.
• Vehicle operation for plant and system maintenance.
