Walk-in Services Intern (Summer 2026)

About the role

The Walk‑in Services Intern will join the International Rescue Committee’s client intake team in Silver Spring, supporting humanitarian immigrants as they access IRC programs and public benefits. This summer‑long position offers hands‑on experience in a fast‑paced, mission‑driven environment.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct in‑person screenings to determine client eligibility for IRC casework, employment, immigration services, and external public benefits.
• Complete enrollment forms, explain client rights and responsibilities, and ensure all documentation is scanned and stored electronically.
• Assist clients with applications for cash assistance, medical insurance, and other eligible public benefits.
• Make follow‑up calls to prospective clients, provide walk‑in day information, reschedule appointments, and answer general inquiries.
• Coordinate contract interpreters for client appointments.
• Enter service data into electronic systems and maintain organized client records.
• Support additional tasks as assigned by the Walk‑in Services team.

Required profile

• Current undergraduate or graduate student, or less than 12 months out of school.
• Availability of at least 24 hours per week for a three‑month commitment, including three full working days each week.
• Strong interest in humanitarian work and serving immigrant communities.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook.
