VP, Controller (Deputy CFO) – New York

About the role
We are seeking a hands‑on VP, Controller (Deputy CFO) to lead the accounting and finance function of a fast‑growing media startup. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will build scalable processes, ensure robust financial controls, and provide strategic insights that drive confident decision‑making across the organization.
Key responsibilities
- Lead day‑to‑day accounting, month‑end, quarter‑end and year‑end close, overseeing AR/AP, payroll, revenue recognition, fixed assets and cash management.
- Design, implement and maintain GAAP‑compliant financial statements, reporting systems and internal controls.
- Serve as primary liaison with auditors, tax advisors and external service providers; coordinate annual audits.
- Ensure federal, state and local tax compliance, manage equity transactions, cap‑table updates and commission reporting.
- Assess, upgrade and automate financial systems (ERP, automation tools) to improve reporting speed and quality.
- Partner with the CFO and executive team on financial strategy, risk management, banking, treasury and investor relations.
Required profile
- 9+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including audit exposure.
- CPA certification required.
- Proven track record building or scaling an accounting function in high‑growth or venture‑backed companies.
- Deep knowledge of equity accounting, cap‑tables and complex revenue models.
- Strong analytical mindset, detail‑driven and able to create reliable, scalable workflows.
