VP, Controller (Deputy CFO) – New York

About the role

We are seeking a hands‑on VP, Controller (Deputy CFO) to lead the accounting and finance function of a fast‑growing media startup. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will build scalable processes, ensure robust financial controls, and provide strategic insights that drive confident decision‑making across the organization.

Key responsibilities

• Lead day‑to‑day accounting, month‑end, quarter‑end and year‑end close, overseeing AR/AP, payroll, revenue recognition, fixed assets and cash management.
• Produce accurate, GAAP‑compliant financial statements and improve accounting systems, workflows and internal controls.
• Ensure federal, state and local tax compliance, manage equity transactions, cap‑table updates and coordinate annual audits.
• Assess, upgrade and automate financial systems (ERP, reporting tools) to increase speed and quality of reporting.
• Partner with the CFO and executive team on financial strategy, risk management, banking, treasury, financing and investor relations.

Required profile

• 8+ years of experience in accounting/finance, including audit experience; CPA required.
• Proven track record building or improving an accounting function in high‑growth or venture‑backed companies.
• Deep knowledge of equity accounting, cap tables and complex revenue models.
• Strong technical accounting expertise with GAAP proficiency.
• Process‑oriented, detail‑driven, proactive and able to communicate financial information to non‑finance teams.
