Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program Intern

About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a VITA Intern to support its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program for refugees, immigrants, and low‑income individuals. This internship provides hands‑on experience in tax preparation, volunteer coordination, and community outreach during the tax season (January‑April 2026).

Key responsibilities

• Assist VITA volunteers—including greeters, tax preparers, and quality reviewers—in daily site operations.
• Schedule client appointments, deliver high‑quality customer service, and conduct quality reviews of tax returns.
• Complete IRS Link & Learn training at the Advanced level and electronically file returns in compliance with IRS and VITA procedures.
• Support volunteer recruitment, engagement, retention, and maintain accurate volunteer records using the Golden Volunteer Management Platform.
• Coordinate marketing and outreach initiatives for the IRC VITA program and generate participation reports.

Required profile

• Undergraduate degree in finance, accounting, or a related field preferred, or equivalent education/experience.
• Excellent customer service, organizational skills, and strong attention to detail.
• Ability to work in multicultural environments and commitment to economic empowerment of underserved populations.
• Fluent written and verbal English communication.

Required skills

• Tax preparation and filing knowledge.
• IRS Link & Learn tax‑software training.
• Experience with Golden Volunteer Management Platform for data tracking.
