Veteran Service Officer (VSO1) – Georgia State

About the role

The State of Georgia is seeking a Veteran Service Officer (VSO1) to join the Department of Veterans Services in Athens. The VSO1 will serve Georgia’s veteran community by guiding them through VA benefit claims and connecting them with essential support services.

Key responsibilities

• Assist veterans, dependents, and survivors in filing and managing claims for compensation, pension, education, health care, and survivor benefits.
• Interpret federal Title 38 U.S. Code, VA regulations, and state policies to provide accurate guidance.
• Review military service records and medical documentation to identify service‑connected conditions such as PTSD, TBI, Agent Orange‑related illnesses, and burn‑pit exposure.
• Coordinate with VA officials, health‑care providers, and legal representatives throughout the claims and appeals process.
• Conduct community outreach, deliver presentations, and educate veterans on eligibility and available services.
• Manage cases using the Unite Us system, ensuring timely referrals for housing, mental‑health care, and employment assistance.

Required profile

• High school diploma/GED plus at least 60 semester hours of college coursework.
• Minimum one year of experience in case management, word processing, and interviewing.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a VA Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card.
• Ability to pass a background check, annual training, and the TRIP certification test.

Required skills

• Proficiency with the Unite Us case‑management platform.
