Vessel Strike Avoidance Observer (Temporary)

About the role

A.I.S., Inc. is seeking qualified Vessel Strike Avoidance (VSA) observers to support offshore cable‑repair operations off the coast of New York during summer/fall 2026. Observers will work in rotating 12‑hour shifts aboard vessels, providing real‑time monitoring and mitigation for protected marine species.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor waters continuously for visual detections of marine mammals during up to 12 hours per day.
• Advise vessel crew on regulatory requirements and immediate mitigation actions.
• Identify species using the naked eye and visual technology, document behavior, and record essential data.
• Enter data into required sheets, perform personal QA/QC checks, and maintain accurate records.
• Participate in daily toolbox, HSE, and project meetings.
• Operate and maintain field equipment such as Garmin GPS, binoculars with reticles, range finders, handheld thermal imaging, night‑vision devices, and high‑resolution digital cameras.

Required profile

• Current STCW Basic Safety Training (or GWO/BOSIET) and CPR/First Aid certification.
• Four‑year degree in biological or geophysical sciences.
• Physician‑certified fit for sea duty, no chronic motion sickness, able to lift 30 lb.
• Completed and certified PSO course; NMFS‑approved PSO letter.
• Valid Real ID and proof of U.S. work eligibility.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Garmin GPS navigation.
• Use of binoculars with reticles and range‑finding equipment.
• Operation of handheld thermal imaging and night‑vision devices.
• High‑resolution digital photography and video capture.
• Accurate data entry and QA/QC procedures.

What we offer

• Hourly compensation (negotiable) with eligibility for AIS benefits after 30 days, including health, dental, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.
• Full‑time temporary assignment lasting 2–6 weeks per deployment.
