Vessel Strike Avoidance Observer – Offshore Survey

About the role
A.I.S., Inc. is seeking Vessel Strike Avoidance Observers to join a squid‑trawl survey vessel operating off the coast of New York. Observers will monitor for protected marine species, record sightings, and implement real‑time mitigation measures during 24‑hour offshore operations.
Key responsibilities
- Monitor the water column for visual detections of marine mammals for up to 12 hours per shift.
- Advise the crew on regulatory requirements and immediate strike‑avoidance actions.
- Identify marine animals using the naked eye and visual technology.
- Document behavior, sightings, and other essential data on standardized sheets.
- Enter and quality‑check data daily, ensuring accuracy.
- Attend toolbox, HSE, and project meetings as required.
- Operate and maintain field equipment such as GPS, binoculars, range finders, thermal imaging, night‑vision devices, and high‑resolution cameras.
Required profile
- Current STCW Basic Safety Training, GWO or BOSIET certification.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification.
- Bachelor’s degree in biological or geophysical sciences.
- Physician‑certified fit for sea duty (no chronic motion sickness, able to lift 30 lb, tolerate confined quarters and stress).
- Completed and NMFS‑approved PSO course with valid approval letter.
- Valid Real ID.
