Vessel Strike Avoidance Observer – Cataumet, MA

About the role

A.I.S., Inc. is seeking qualified Vessel Strike Avoidance Observers to join a research vessel conducting benthic surveys off Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island. The observer will monitor for marine mammals and other protected species, ensuring compliance with NMFS regulations and implementing strike‑avoidance measures during 24‑hour offshore operations.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor visual detections of marine mammals for up to 12 hours per shift.
• Advise the vessel crew on regulatory requirements and real‑time mitigation actions.
• Identify marine animals using naked eye and visual technology.
• Document behavior, sightings, and other essential data.
• Enter collected data into required data sheets and perform QA/QC checks.
• Attend daily toolbox, HSE, and project meetings.
• Operate and maintain field equipment such as Garmin GPS, binoculars with reticles, range finder, handheld thermal imaging, night‑vision devices, and high‑resolution digital camera.

Required profile

• Current STCW Basic Safety Training, GWO or BOSIET certification.
• Current CPR/First Aid certification.
• Four‑year degree in biological or geophysical sciences.
• Physician‑certified fit for sea duty (no chronic motion sickness, able to lift 30 lb, tolerate confined quarters and stress).
• Approved NMFS Protected Species Observer (PSO) certification and letter.
• Valid Real ID.
