Utility Operator Trainee – Water & Wastewater

About the role

The City of Surprise is seeking a Utility Operator Trainee to learn and support the operation, maintenance, and repair of its water and wastewater treatment facilities. Working under the guidance of certified operators, the trainee will gain hands‑on experience in water production systems and develop the skills needed for a full‑time operator role.

Key responsibilities

• Assist certified operators with daily technical operations of water and wastewater treatment plants.
• Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs on treatment equipment.
• Follow the performance development plan and meet training milestones.
• Adhere to safety, environmental, and regulatory procedures.
• Be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED (no experience required).
• Valid Arizona driver’s license.
• Ability to obtain a Grade 1 Operator Certification (Distribution and Water Treatment) within nine months of hire.
• Preferred coursework in engineering, mathematics, natural resources, science, or related fields; additional college‑level training in water treatment, chemistry, or biology is a plus.
