Trim Engineering Intern - Automotive Seat Systems

About the role

The Trim Engineering Intern role gives exposure to a team of technical professionals and helps develop technical and product design skills, including communication skills for A-surface trim engineering on automotive seat systems. Summer interns work full-time (40 hours per week) from May 3, 2027 through August 12, 2027, on site in Plymouth, Michigan.

Key responsibilities

• Help solve design issues using the Basic Engineering Process (BEP) and lean engineering, and complete A3s presented in weekly and executive design reviews.
• Work with Subject Matter Technical Experts (SMTEs) and gain exposure to the product development process.
• Support on-time execution of A-surface material and seat testing by coordinating sample prep, test timing and analytical reports.
• Learn seat requirements, durability and tactical planning.
• Gain exposure to Design For Assembly and Manufacturing (DFAM), including trim cover sewing, automation and JIT assembly.
• Learn Design for Cost by evaluating design changes in CAD and Optitex and assessing their cost impact.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in an accredited university, working toward a 4-year B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a B.S. in Textiles.
• Available to work up to 40 hours per week, on site in Plymouth, Michigan.
• Minimum overall GPA of at least 3.0.
• Previous automotive-related internship or co-op experience is an added plus.

Required skills

• CAD experience (CATIA or Unigraphics) is an added plus.
• Solid analytical skills and strong verbal and written communication.
• Attention to detail, organization and follow-up.
• Proficiency in MS Office.
