Transportation Design Engineer I/II (Tyler District Headquarters)

About the role
The Transportation Design Engineer I or II provides transportation engineering expertise for planning, design, construction and operations at the Tyler District Headquarters. The role creates schematic and PS&E designs, conducts on‑site engineering reviews, and serves as a liaison with consultants, MPOs and the public. Work is performed independently with supervision only for unusual issues.
Key responsibilities
- Design moderately complex schematic and PS&E projects, including layouts, sketches, plans, specifications and cost estimates.
- Travel to project sites to perform engineering reviews, analyses, tests and provide technical support.
- Monitor consultant progress, review invoices, prepare supplemental agreements and negotiate contracts.
- Use Critical Path Method (CPM) for scheduling and resource management of transportation projects.
- Coordinate project plans and schedules to ensure efficient execution.
- Assist in developing and monitoring project budgets (Engineer II).
- Perform complex planning work, including plan reviews and transportation planning studies (Engineer II).
- Train and mentor engineering staff (Engineer II).
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related science accepted by TX PELS.
- 4 years (Engineer I) or 5 years (Engineer II) of engineering/transportation engineering experience.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a state vehicle.
- Professional Engineer license or eligibility to obtain a Texas PE license.
