About the role
The Department of Romance Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a Teaching Assistant Professor to join its diverse, plurilingual faculty. The position begins July 1 2026 and involves delivering high‑quality undergraduate and graduate instruction in French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and related minority languages, while contributing to the department’s research and service missions.
Key responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate courses to a large, diverse student body (approximately 5,000 enrollments each semester) across the Romance language spectrum.
- Supervise graduate coursework and research for roughly 100 MA and PhD candidates in literature, linguistics and cultural studies.
- Provide academic technology support to foreign‑language instructors through the Foreign Language Resource Center.
- Contribute to the department’s scholarly publications, including the journals *Hispania* and *Romance Notes* and the *North Carolina Series in Romance Studies*.
- Guide pre‑professional training, including classroom teaching, study‑abroad coordination and mentorship of emerging scholars.
Required profile
- Doctoral degree or equivalent terminal qualification in a Romance language field.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching and a strong record of scholarly research.
- Ability to engage students in transnational and regional cultural contexts.
- Commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and service to the university community.
