Systems Administrator – Department of Earth Environmental & Resource Sciences

About the role

The Department of Earth Environmental and Resource Sciences at UTEP seeks a Systems Administrator to ensure the reliability, security, and performance of its computing environment. You will support faculty, staff, and students by delivering high‑quality technical assistance and maintaining critical infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain servers, RAID arrays, backup systems, UPS units, and coordinate with HPC/TACC facilities.
• Manage software updates, licensing, and user accounts on departmental systems.
• Provide on‑site and remote technical support for workstations, mobile devices, printers, and lab equipment.
• Administer instructional computer labs, image systems, and install class‑specific software.
• Assist with data management, large‑dataset handling, and development of research computing workflows.
• Track hardware/software inventory, support procurement, and contribute to grant‑related IT proposals.
• Maintain department websites and shared digital repositories of earth and environmental data.

Required profile

• Experience supporting a mixed Windows, macOS, and Linux environment.
• Ability to troubleshoot hardware, software, and network issues independently.
• Strong communication skills for training faculty and students.
• Attention to detail for compliance with data‑security and export‑control regulations.
