Surplus Lines Tax Specialist

About the role

The Surplus Lines Tax Specialist will manage and process surplus lines tax filings, payments and reconciliations across multiple states, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements in a fast‑paced wholesale insurance environment.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare, file and remit surplus lines tax filings and payments for various jurisdictions.
• Calculate and allocate surplus lines taxes, stamping fees and assessments accurately.
• Reconcile tax payments to premium and policy data and maintain compliance calendars.
• Coordinate with surplus lines associations, stamping offices, carriers and internal teams to resolve discrepancies.
• Maintain documentation for audits and support internal and external audit processes.
• Monitor changes to state surplus lines laws, tax rates and filing requirements.
• Assist process improvement and automation initiatives.
• Partner with accounting, operations and underwriting to ensure data integrity.

Required profile

• 3–6+ years of experience in surplus lines tax processing, insurance accounting or compliance, preferably in wholesale insurance, MGA/MGU or brokerage.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field preferred; relevant experience may substitute.
• Ability to work independently in a remote setting.

• High attention to detail with strong reconciliation and analytical abilities.
• Effective communication with internal teams and external agencies.
• Proficiency in Excel and financial systems.
• Experience with agency management systems and surplus lines tax platforms (preferred).
