Supervisory Nurse – Workers’ Compensation

About the role

The Supervisory Nurse leads the Workers’ Compensation Nurse Case Management team within the DC Office of Risk Management. This role ensures clinically appropriate, timely, and cost‑effective case management for District employees with work‑related injuries or illnesses.

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee and mentor a team of Workers’ Compensation Nurse Case Managers.
  • Review complex, high‑cost claims involving prolonged disability, catastrophic injury, or disputed medical issues.
  • Provide clinical guidance on treatment plans, work restrictions, impairment ratings, and functional capacity evaluations.
  • Direct utilization management to confirm medical necessity and adherence to evidence‑based guidelines.
  • Collaborate with claims examiners, legal staff, vocational rehabilitation specialists, and agency stakeholders to facilitate integrated claim resolution and return‑to‑work planning.
  • Develop, update, and enforce clinical policies and procedures.
  • Perform supervisory duties such as work assignment, performance evaluation, training needs identification, leave approval, and corrective actions.
  • Analyze medical and claims data to identify trends and recommend cost‑control interventions.

Required profile

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Extensive experience in workers’ compensation nursing and case management.
  • Proven supervisory or leadership experience in a clinical setting.
  • Strong knowledge of workers’ compensation statutes, regulations, and treatment guidelines.
  • Excellent clinical judgment and ability to interpret complex medical information.
