Substitute Custodian (Part‑time)

About the role

The Peralta Community College District is seeking substitute custodians on an as‑needed basis. Work schedules include day, swing, and graveyard shifts, with up to 40 hours per week. This classified, part‑time position is represented by IUOE Local 39.

Key responsibilities

• Clean, sweep, mop, strip, wax, and vacuum floors, carpets, and rugs.
• Maintain restrooms, classrooms, labs, kitchens, theaters, locker rooms, and gym areas.
• Wash walls, remove graffiti, clean windows, drinking fountains, and waste containers.
• Replace lights, clean diffusers, and assist with setting up facilities for special events.
• Report repairs, hazardous materials, or safety violations to supervisors.

Required profile

• At least one year of custodial or janitorial experience, or equivalent training.
• Demonstrated cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse academic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both spoken and written.

Required skills

• Proficiency with floor cleaning machines, carpet extractors, and pressure washers.
• Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, and hazardous material handling.
• Safe operation of ladders, gas tractors, and electrical cleaning equipment.
