Structural Bridge Engineer I – Pennsylvania

About the role

Parsons is expanding its Pennsylvania bridge practice and seeks a Structural Bridge Engineer I to support PennDOT projects. You will work on a variety of bridge types, from conventional replacements to accelerated construction, across multiple districts.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare structural calculations, design summaries, and bridge plans that comply with PennDOT Design Manuals and AASHTO LRFD specifications.
• Develop detailed construction documents, cost estimates, and bid packages for new and existing bridges, abutments, piers, retaining walls, and related structures.
• Coordinate with roadway, geotechnical, hydraulics, and traffic engineers to ensure geometric, foundation, scour, and constructability requirements are met.
• Provide technical guidance to CAD designers and junior engineers, reviewing plans, elevations, sections, and reinforcement details.
• Assist with load rating analyses and prepare PennDOT load rating reports using approved software.
• Support QC/QA activities, peer reviews, and respond to PennDOT review comments.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master’s preferred).
• 3+ years of bridge structural analysis and design experience, preferably on PennDOT or other state DOT projects.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification with intent to obtain Pennsylvania PE licensure.
• Familiarity with PennDOT design manuals, submission processes, and standard drawings.
• Strong written and oral communication skills for documenting design assumptions and responding to reviews.

Required skills

• Design of steel, reinforced concrete, and prestressed/precast concrete bridges.
• AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.
• PennDOT Design Manuals (DM‑4, DM‑2) and standard drawings.
• Bridge engineering software such as LEAP, MIDAS, LARSA, CSiBridge, STAAD.
• Bentley MicroStation, OpenRoads, OpenBridge tools.
• Experience with PennDOT CAD standards.
