Staff Software Engineer, Trading Platform - Charts

About the role

Topstep is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the design and implementation of a custom charting engine for its TopstepX trading platform. You will own a framework‑agnostic library that powers real‑time charts used by thousands of active traders.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build core charting systems, including rendering primitives, layer management, hit testing, and text measurement.
• Define and maintain the public API used by React, React Native, and direct consumers.
• Develop and support the thin React binding that adapts the core library for the web application.
• Guide architectural decisions around canvas compositing, layer strategy, and thread boundaries.
• Establish and enforce performance standards (e.g., 60 fps frame budget) and ensure responsive interaction under continuous data flow.
• Implement the data integration layer that connects real‑time market data to the charting engine.
• Create visual testing infrastructure, including pixel‑diffing and golden‑image regression.
• Lead architectural reviews, RFCs, and mentor engineers through code and design reviews.

Required profile

• Proven experience shipping a production charting or visualization library.
• Deep understanding of interactive UI performance and real‑time data handling.
• Strong opinions on API design and ability to set engineering standards.
• Ability to balance technical debt with feature delivery while maintaining library health.
