Staff Software Engineer

About the role

Topstep is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead technical initiatives on its high‑performance trading platform. You will design, build, and operate cloud‑native services that handle real‑time trading, market data, and brokerage integrations for thousands of active traders.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement services and APIs that power core trading capabilities.
• Own initiatives from design through production deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
• Collaborate with product and design teams to translate user needs into scalable solutions.
• Shape system architecture, establishing patterns and best practices for other teams.
• Write clean, well‑tested code focused on reliability, performance, and operational excellence.
• Participate in on‑call rotations, respond to incidents, and drive reliability improvements.
• Build observability through metrics, logging, and distributed tracing.
• Contribute occasionally to the React/TypeScript frontend as needed.
• Mentor engineers via code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
• Balance technical debt with feature delivery, making trade‑offs based on business priorities.

Required profile

• 8+ years of software engineering experience building production systems at scale.
• Deep expertise in C# and the .NET ecosystem.
• Proven ability to design service boundaries, API versioning, and micro‑service architectures.
• Experience building distributed, high‑availability systems with asynchronous, event‑driven communication.
• Strong judgment for navigating ambiguity, mentoring teams, and defining engineering standards.
