Staff+ Software Engineer – Databases

About the role

Anthropic is looking for an experienced software engineer to design, build, and scale the database infrastructure that powers Claude’s products and internal AI research. You will shape the data platform that serves millions of users and supports frontier‑level AI workloads.

Key responsibilities

• Define and drive the technical direction for database solutions across product and research teams.
• Design and implement systems that handle billions of API requests and scale with 100x+ growth.
• Build a unified database platform that abstracts storage complexities for engineers.
• Architect data storage that runs on GCP, AWS, first‑party, and third‑party deployments.
• Create migration, backfill, and change‑data‑capture pipelines to move data safely.
• Develop and operate caching infrastructure with CDC‑driven invalidation.
• Partner with product and research stakeholders to translate data requirements into reliable infrastructure.
• Optimize performance, reliability, and cost efficiency at massive scale.

Required profile

• Significant experience building and operating production database or storage systems.
• Deep knowledge of distributed database architectures and high‑throughput OLTP systems.
• Proficiency with SQL and at least one major relational or distributed engine (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Spanner, CockroachDB, DynamoDB).
• Proven track record leading large, complex infrastructure projects.
• Ability to balance rapid development with production reliability.
• Strong technical leadership and cross‑functional collaboration skills.
