Staff+ Software Engineer, Backend

About the role

Anthropic is seeking experienced, product‑focused engineers to own the backend systems that power its API, Claude Code, and Claude.ai platforms. You will lead multi‑month projects through ambiguous problem spaces, collaborate with product, research, and other engineering teams, and translate cutting‑edge model improvements into shipped products.

Key responsibilities

• Scope, design, and deliver complex backend projects that serve hundreds of thousands of global users.
• Make architectural decisions that ensure reliability, scalability, and performance of core serving paths.
• Partner with inference, safeguards, and product teams to optimize the full stack.
• Drive alignment across product, engineering, and research to identify capability gaps.
• Establish processes that prevent repeat failures and improve team effectiveness.

Required profile

• Strong product mindset with the ability to own end‑to‑end backend systems.
• Proven experience leading large‑scale, high‑impact engineering projects.
• Ability to work independently in ambiguous environments and guide peers through technical decisions.
• Excellent collaboration skills with product, design, GTM, and research stakeholders.
