Staff Software Engineer – AI-Powered Development Tools

About the role

Anthropic is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the development of Claude Code, an AI‑powered suite of tools that help developers write, test, and debug code more efficiently. You will work at the intersection of cutting‑edge large language model research and practical developer‑experience engineering.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable features and infrastructure for AI‑assisted coding tools.
• Collaborate with external developers and internal researchers to gather feedback and improve user experience.
• Experiment with emerging AI techniques, evaluate new tools, and track enhancements.
• Contribute across the full stack—from front‑end UI to back‑end services—to deliver new features, fix bugs, and optimize performance.
• Work with diverse environments such as Python notebooks, VS Code extensions, and containerized runtimes.

Required profile

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Passion for developer tools and AI‑assisted coding.
• Strong focus on safety, security, and ethical impact of AI systems.
• Ability to quickly adapt to unfamiliar codebases and development environments.

Required skills

• Expertise in React, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript patterns (hooks, context, suspense).
• Proficiency with Python and Python notebook environments.
• Experience building VS Code extensions and CLI tools.
• Hands‑on work with large language models and prompt engineering.
• Knowledge of container orchestration, cloud infrastructure, and alternative runtimes such as Bun or Deno.
