Staff+ Infrastructure Engineer – Cluster Infrastructure

About the role

Anthropic is building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems, and its Infrastructure organization underpins that mission. As a Staff+ Infrastructure Engineer on the Cluster Infrastructure team, you will define the technical direction for provisioning, managing, and scaling compute clusters across cloud providers and Anthropic’s own datacenters.

Key responsibilities

• Own the technical strategy and roadmap for agent‑driven cluster lifecycle management, including provisioning, updates, and decommissioning.
• Partner with cross‑functional teams to ensure timely ingestion of new compute capacity.
• Coordinate physical build‑out and leverage cloud solutions for high‑bandwidth inter‑cluster connectivity.
• Collaborate with security owners to guarantee clusters are provisioned secure‑by‑default.
• Define and drive strategies for cluster scalability, homogeneity, and fault tolerance.
• Work with cloud providers and internal research, inference, and product teams to shape long‑term compute and infrastructure strategy.
• Establish operational‑excellence practices such as incident response, post‑mortems, and on‑call health.
• Mentor and coach engineers to grow technical capabilities across the team.

Required profile

• Deep expertise in distributed systems, reliability engineering, and major cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Strong proficiency in at least one systems language (Rust, Go, or Python) and Infrastructure‑as‑Code tools, especially Terraform.
• Proven track record of leading multi‑quarter technical initiatives across multiple teams.
• Ability to build alignment with senior stakeholders and communicate effectively at all levels.
