Staff Engineer – Maritime Autonomy Capabilities
shieldai · Washington
Job description
About the role
This position focuses on the maritime portfolio, creating autonomy capabilities for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and cooperating UAVs. You will enable advanced single‑ and multi‑agent teaming missions, building capabilities from the ground up and transitioning short‑term R&D efforts into larger, multi‑year programs.
Key responsibilities
- Develop robust motion‑planning algorithms for USVs/UUVs that respect safety constraints such as keep‑out volumes and depth limits.
- Design and implement localization and tracking solutions using passive and active sensor fusion across single‑ or multi‑agent networks.
- Ensure safe maritime operations by embedding COLREGS compliance and runtime assurance into autonomous behavior architectures.
- Create distributed optimization and task‑allocation methods for heterogeneous multi‑agent collaboration.
- Produce high‑performance, well‑tested software modules ready for mid‑ to high‑TRL integration.
- Collaborate with perception, planning, simulation, hardware and test teams to integrate autonomy on real platforms.
- Support deployment, integration events and analysis of mission logs to validate system performance.
- Contribute to autonomy road‑maps through research, prototyping and identification of capability gaps.
Required profile
- BS/MS in Computer Science, Electrical/Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
- Minimum 7 years of relevant experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Proficiency in C++ and Python with familiarity of real‑time operating systems (RTOS).
- Strong background in robotics technologies such as motion planning, behavior modeling, decision‑making and autonomous system design.
- Experience with unmanned system technologies and simulation tools (e.g., AFSIM, NGTS).
- Ability to obtain a SECRET clearance.
