Staff Engineer, Flight Sciences, Design - Ranger

About the role

Shield AI is hiring a Flight Sciences Engineer, Design for its X-BAT program in Seattle. You will drive aircraft programs to success through aerodynamic design, CFD analysis, performance modeling, wind tunnel testing and flight test data analysis, helping aircraft achieve optimal aerodynamic efficiency, stability and performance.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct aerodynamic design and build multi-disciplinary optimizations
• Run CFD simulations and communicate the results
• Build aerodynamic models from wind tunnel data, CFD data, physics-based data or a mix of them
• Develop and implement aerodynamic performance models and tools for design and flight operations
• Support wind tunnel test campaigns
• Analyze flight test data to validate and refine aerodynamic models and designs
• Work with structural, propulsion and control systems engineers

Required profile

• 7+ years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 6 years with a Master's, or 4 years with a PhD, or equivalent
• 5+ years in aerodynamics or conceptual design on air vehicle programs
• Experience in aircraft sizing and conceptual design
• Strong problem-solving, communication and leadership skills

Required skills

• Familiarity with CFD software and techniques
• Familiarity with basic aerodynamic tool development in Python / MATLAB
• Preferred: background in aerodynamics across low-subsonic to supersonic flows, significant CFD experience (STAR-CCM+ preferred), MDO experience, lofting/surfacing experience (ideally in NX)
