Staff Counsel – Litigation Attorney

About the role

Liberty Mutual is seeking a Staff Counsel to independently manage moderately complex civil litigation matters. The position is primarily remote within the United States, with occasional in‑person appearances as required. The attorney will represent the company and its policyholders in claims involving personal injury or property damage of up to approximately $50,000.

Key responsibilities

• Manage all phases of litigation, from legal research and drafting pleadings to settlement negotiations, hearings, trials and mediations.
• Support senior trial counsel by preparing case files, managing discovery, and assisting throughout trial proceedings.
• Develop and refine advanced legal strategies for discovery, investigation and trial preparation.
• Utilize e‑discovery platforms, case‑management systems and data‑analysis tools to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
• Provide clear legal opinions and strategic advice to claims representatives and other internal clients.
• Identify, evaluate and mitigate legal risks in collaboration with senior attorneys.
• Design and deliver training sessions for legal and claims teams and mentor junior attorneys.

Required profile

• Licensed attorney with experience handling civil litigation matters of moderate complexity.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage cases with exposure up to $50,000.
• Strong analytical and communication skills, with a focus on client service.
