Staff Attorney

About the role

The Michigan Elder Justice Initiative is hiring two full‑time Staff Attorneys to represent low‑income older adults and people with disabilities in Michigan. The role focuses on long‑term care, healthcare benefits, elder abuse, and protecting individual rights.

Key responsibilities

• Manage an individual caseload of vulnerable adults.
• Represent clients in administrative hearings and court proceedings.
• Conduct policy analysis and engage in advocacy with state officials.
• Collaborate with community partners and government agencies.
• Develop and maintain educational materials for consumers and advocates.
• Prepare regular reports for grant funders.
• Provide outreach and training to consumers, advocates, and fellow attorneys.

Required profile

• Licensed to practice law in Michigan or eligible for admission by waiver.
• Strong communication, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities.
• Ability to balance a varied workload and meet deadlines.
• Experience in litigation or administrative hearings is preferred, though entry‑level candidates will be considered.
• Commitment to public‑interest advocacy for older adults and people with disabilities.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
• Proficiency with Google Workspace (G Suite).

What we offer

• Starting salary of $60,000, commensurate with experience.
