Staff Attorney – Health Justice Partnership

About the role

The Staff Attorney joins the Montana Health Justice Partnership to work directly with Community Health Centers and other partners serving patients with opioid use disorder. The role focuses on identifying and resolving health‑harming legal needs, providing advice, limited‑scope assistance, and full representation to improve client health outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Travel across Montana to partner health centers to conduct training, hold office hours, and deliver legal services.
• Provide orientation and referral training for health‑center staff.
• Interview, advise, and represent eligible clients on civil matters.
• Develop expertise in the legal issues affecting patients with opioid use disorder.
• Coordinate the medical‑legal partnership, attend meetings, and support data collection.
• Draft correspondence, pleadings, and other legal documents.
• Research legal issues and prepare memoranda.
• Recruit, train, and support pro‑bono attorneys as needed.
• Participate in statewide initiatives and fulfill grant and contract requirements.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
• Admission to the Montana Bar or ability to obtain admission.
• Strong legal research, writing, and advocacy abilities.
• Commitment to serving low‑income, rural, and underserved populations.
• Willingness to manage a varied caseload and travel statewide, including occasional overnight trips.
