Staff Android Software Engineer – Build and Release

About the role

We are looking for a Staff Android Software Engineer focused on Build and Release to join our joint‑venture team in Palo Alto. The role centers on owning and evolving the Android build infrastructure, ensuring high‑uptime, reliable continuous integration and deployment in a cloud environment.

Key responsibilities

• Take full ownership of Android CI pipelines, providing daily support for outages and breakages.
• Design and implement distributed caching mechanisms to accelerate builds from hours to minutes.
• Profile build scans, identify trends, and mitigate common failure modes.
• Diagnose non‑hermetic and non‑deterministic build behavior and create defensive safeguards.
• Optimize builds for containerized and cloud‑based environments.
• Define best‑practice guidelines for tooling across teams and enforce clean, scalable builds.
• Continuously upgrade infrastructure to align with the latest Android build ecosystem standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• Deep DevOps expertise with extensive knowledge of the Android build ecosystem.
• Proven experience using Gradle and Soong for local and cloud deployments.
• Familiarity with Bazel, Buck, or similar build systems.
• Experience managing build architecture at massive scale (hundreds of thousands of builds).
• Strong Git skills, including repo tools, submodules, and git‑lfs.
• Proficiency in Linux, Bash, and Python scripting.
• Passion for build systems, CI/CD, and removing developer bottlenecks.
