Staff Accountant

About the role

The Staff Accountant will support Second Harvest Food Bank’s mission by managing day‑to‑day accounting operations. This full‑time, on‑site position in New Orleans ensures accurate financial records and timely reporting for internal and external stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Record and reconcile financial transactions, prepare journal entries, and maintain general ledger accounts.
• Assist with monthly and year‑end closing processes and budget preparation.
• Produce financial statements and reports for program staff and external partners.
• Process accounts payable and accounts receivable, monitor cash flow, and manage expense tracking.
• Ensure compliance with organizational policies, grant requirements, and applicable accounting standards.
• Collaborate with finance team members and program staff to provide timely financial information.

Required profile

• Demonstrated proficiency in core accounting functions such as general ledger management, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and expense tracking in a nonprofit or similar environment.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; nonprofit finance experience is a plus.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with high attention to detail.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Commitment to the mission of reducing hunger in South Louisiana.
