Staff Accountant (Insurance)

About the role

We are seeking a detail‑oriented Staff Accountant to support core accounting operations for an insurance organization in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The role focuses on maintaining accurate financial records, processing routine accounting entries, and assisting with periodic reporting cycles.

Key responsibilities

• Record and post month‑end journal entries, including accruals, recurring adjustments, and premium‑related transactions.
• Match premium accounts receivable to daily cash receipts and prepare correcting entries as needed.
• Perform daily cash position reconciliations and monitor cash activity across accounts.
• Complete monthly bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies promptly.
• Calculate and prepare agent commission logs and statements for monthly and quarterly cycles.
• Reconcile monthly claims payment balances and verify supporting documentation.
• Prepare premium tax filings for state and municipal jurisdictions.
• Track stale‑dated checks, communicate with payees, and handle unclaimed property reporting.
• Maintain fixed‑asset and depreciation schedules and assist with month‑end close, financial reporting, audits, and other accounting projects.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred.
• At least 1 year of accounting experience; insurance or casualty accounting experience is a plus.
• Working knowledge of journal entries, general ledger activity, and account reconciliation processes.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work independently.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Experience using accounting software in a business environment.
