Speechwriter

About the role

The New York City Police Department is seeking a skilled Speechwriter to craft clear, compelling communications for the Police Commissioner and senior leadership. This role supports a wide range of public‑facing and internal engagements, translating complex public‑safety topics into accessible language.

Key responsibilities

• Draft speeches, remarks, talking points, briefing materials, video scripts, op‑eds, statements and quotes for senior officials.
• Prepare written content for press conferences, public events, ceremonies, legislative hearings and media engagements.
• Research and synthesize crime trends, policy initiatives and operational updates into accurate, audience‑appropriate messaging.
• Collaborate with NYPD bureaus to gather information, verify facts and ensure consistency across all communications.
• Edit and proofread executive materials for tone, grammar, clarity and alignment with departmental priorities.
• Monitor public‑safety issues, major events and news to support timely executive communications.
• Perform additional related duties as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
• At least 2 years of professional writing experience, preferably in government, public affairs, journalism or communications.
• Demonstrated ability to write quickly and accurately under deadline pressure.
• Strong research, editing and proofreading capabilities.
