Smart Hands Engineer

About the role

The Smart Hands Engineer supports Georgetown University’s network and telecommunications infrastructure across its campuses and international sites. This hands‑on position blends field work with strategic planning to ensure reliable, efficient, and secure IT services.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Network Engineering team to design and implement network solutions.
• Develop, maintain, and enforce cabling and telecommunications standards.
• Inspect telecommunication rooms, document issues, and coordinate remediation.
• Obtain and manage quotes from IT cabling contractors.
• Maintain physical network equipment inventory, handle RMA processes, and track assets.
• Use network monitoring tools to detect and resolve failing equipment.
• Follow all work ticket, change control, and incident management procedures.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• 3–5 years of experience supporting network or telecommunications infrastructure.
• Ability to work in both office environments and technical spaces such as data closets and telecom rooms, including lifting and carrying equipment.

Required skills

• Experience with network monitoring tools (e.g., Meraki, SolarWinds).
• Knowledge of cabling standards and telecommunications best practices.
• Proficiency in inventory and RMA management processes.
