Senior VistA System Administrator (Remote)

About the role

VetsEZ is seeking a Senior VistA System Administrator to support a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) government IT contract for VistA systems. The role leads VistA system administration and configures, customizes, patches, maintains, audits and supports VistA systems used by VA staff, working with other technical engineers in a SAFe/Agile framework. The position is listed as remote.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a team of VistA system administrators, prioritizing work, identifying high-risk critical problems and allocating resources.
• Create plans for the management, operation and maintenance of VistA systems.
• Configure, customize and maintain VistA systems to meet project and client requirements.
• Install and test nationally released VA VistA patches, and audit installed patches and user and service accounts.
• Manage user accounts, permissions and access controls, and provide direct user support and troubleshooting.
• Monitor system performance, including high-volume/high-availability systems, and recommend improvements.
• Collaborate with other IT technical engineers and take part in SAFe/Agile ceremonies.
• Maintain technical documentation on configurations, patch management and user support.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, electronics engineering or another engineering or technical discipline; 8 years of additional relevant experience may substitute for the degree.
• 5+ years of experience, including as a Systems Engineer, VistA Developer or VistA System Administrator in government IT environments.
• Experience managing teams of system administrators.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
• Experience supporting VA or other federal healthcare IT environments.

Required skills

• Hands-on experience configuring and patching VistA systems.
• Working knowledge of SAFe/Agile methodologies.
• Extensive knowledge of systems and networks, including high-volume/high-availability systems.
• Experience with AI-assisted tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) to debug VistA routines, summarize patch descriptions and audit results, and establish team practices for AI-assisted administration, while protecting PHI/PII and using only agency-approved tools.
