Senior Systems Engineer – Laser Integration & Applications

About the role

Applied Materials is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to lead the integration and optimization of laser‑based processes within capital manufacturing equipment for advanced transparent substrates. The role focuses on integrating commercial laser sources into automated tools and delivering production‑ready performance.

Key responsibilities

• Integrate commercial laser sources (UV, visible, IR, short‑pulse) into automated processing tools and collaborate with vendors on system requirements.
• Architect laser subsystems including beam delivery, optics, motion coordination, and safety integration.
• Develop and optimize process windows for substrate marking, serialization, laser‑based separation and singulation, tuning parameters such as pulse energy, repetition rate, scan speed, and focus depth.
• Drive end‑to‑end system optimization across laser performance, precision motion, substrate handling, vision alignment and inspection.
• Lead validation plans, support NPI and beta tools, and resolve field issues through root‑cause analysis.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Photonics or related field.
• 7+ years of experience in laser applications, laser system integration, and automated precision manufacturing equipment.
• Hands‑on experience integrating commercial laser systems into complex equipment and strong understanding of laser‑material interaction for brittle or transparent substrates.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot, optimize complex systems and work cross‑functionally with mechanical, electrical, controls, software and process teams.
