Senior Staff Software Engineer – API

About the role

Anthropic is looking for an exceptional Senior Staff Software Engineer to lead the technical direction of the Claude API platform. In this high‑agency position you will shape the strategy and execution for API Core, Capabilities, Knowledge, Distributability, and Agents, ensuring the service scales safely and reliably for developers, enterprises, and partners.

Key responsibilities

• Define and drive a multi‑year technical strategy for the Claude API across all sub‑teams.
• Identify and lead the most complex, high‑impact engineering initiatives that span multiple groups.
• Make major architectural decisions with organization‑wide scope.
• Partner with Research, Inference, Platform, Infrastructure, and Safeguards to integrate frontier capabilities and guarantee reliable, secure deployment.
• Mentor and develop Staff‑level engineers throughout the organization.
• Align product, go‑to‑market, safety, and other stakeholders while proactively managing systemic technical risks.

Required profile

• 12+ years of engineering experience, having operated at Staff or Senior Staff level.
• Proven track record shaping technical strategy for large‑scale API or distributed systems platforms.
• Ability to influence outcomes without formal authority, leading through technical excellence and strategic thinking.
