Senior Software Engineer, Backend

About the role

SimSpace is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to own the orchestration engine that powers its internet simulation platform. You will design and operate the control‑plane API, event‑driven backbone, storage layer, and Kubernetes‑native deployment model that enable multi‑tenant, multi‑range simulations.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build a reliable, idempotent control‑plane API used by range orchestration and scenario systems.
• Own the event‑driven orchestration layer that coordinates multi‑step operations across subsystems.
• Develop and maintain the platform’s persistent storage infrastructure for services, content, certificates, and topology state.
• Implement the Kubernetes operators/controllers that manage the platform lifecycle, upgrades, and multi‑range scaling.
• Define the authoritative state model and recovery mechanisms for partial failures.
• Collaborate on in‑range proxy agent architecture, handling deployment and connectivity.
• Partner with SRE to create runbooks, incident response procedures, and observability instrumentation.
• Contribute to cross‑cutting concerns such as configuration management, secrets handling, and security posture.

Required profile

• Proven experience building backend services from scratch, preferably with Kotlin and Spring Boot.
• Strong API design instincts and experience delivering platform APIs used by other engineers.
• Solid fundamentals in distributed systems, consistency, failure modes, and convergence.
• Hands‑on experience with event‑driven or message‑driven architectures.
• Deep expertise in Kubernetes, including writing operators/controllers and managing custom resources.
• Experience designing and operating storage systems across file, object, and container paradigms.
• Operational rigor: instrumentation, runbooks, and proactive failure analysis.
• Familiarity with air‑gapped or on‑premises Kubernetes deployments and GitOps‑based workflows is a plus.
