Senior Ruby Developer

About the role

The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a Senior Ruby Developer to work remotely from anywhere in the United States. You will join a technical team responsible for designing, building, and maintaining production‑grade APIs that connect internal, external, and third‑party systems.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and document REST and GraphQL APIs, including specifications, endpoints, and data models.
• Build and maintain production‑grade Ruby services and ensure code quality through reviews.
• Integrate APIs with internal systems, external applications, and third‑party services.
• Implement authentication, authorization, encryption, and secure development practices.
• Monitor performance, optimize reliability and scalability, and manage versioning.
• Participate in Tier 1 and Tier 2 on‑call rotations and troubleshoot production issues.
• Collaborate with technical leads, API architects, and external engineering teams on standards, governance, and compliance.

Required profile

• 6+ years of hands‑on Ruby on Rails development.
• Strong experience designing, building, and maintaining APIs.
• Proven ability to lead engineering teams while staying hands‑on.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
