Senior Optical Engineer

About the role

Alcon is seeking a Senior Optical Engineer to join its Intraocular Lens (IOL) R&D and Advanced Optics team at the Fort Worth, Texas campus. The role focuses on proprietary optical design, simulation, and metrology innovations that advance vision‑restoring ophthalmic technologies. You will work onsite, collaborating with cross‑functional teams to solve complex vision‑correction challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Drive cross‑functional innovation with Optics, Ophthalmology, Chemistry, and Mechanical Engineering teams to address IOL and vision‑correction challenges.
• Lead end‑to‑end optical design and simulation using Zemax or Code V, developing optics optimized for human vision and defining rigorous metrology.
• Own critical IOL R&D programs from concept through execution, introducing new design methodologies, materials, or processes.
• Leverage advanced computation and data‑driven analysis (Python, MATLAB, machine‑learning libraries) to accelerate design decisions and improve performance robustness.
• Set technical standards, mentor colleagues, lead design reviews, and ensure compliance with ISO, FDA, and MDD regulations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Optics, Optical Engineering, Physics or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum two years of relevant experience in optical engineering or related R&D.
• Fluent written and spoken English.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Python and common ML/data libraries (NumPy, SciPy, scikit‑learn, PyTorch/TensorFlow).
• Experience with MATLAB.
• Expertise in optical design software such as Zemax or Code V.
