Senior Mechanical Engineer - Structures

About the role

Radiant, a startup developing portable nuclear micro‑reactors, is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and development of critical structural components for its 1‑MW Kaleidos reactor. You will work on high‑temperature, transportable shielding and container systems, ensuring they meet stringent safety, performance and size requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Own the design of mass‑efficient transportable shielding, container, and high‑temperature graphite and metallic systems.
• Conduct trade studies, material selection and detailed thermomechanical analysis (static strength, fatigue, vibration, shock).
• Perform hand calculations and finite‑element simulations using tools such as Abaqus, Ansys or FEMAP.
• Develop manufacturing, assembly instructions and test plans; manage Bill‑of‑Materials and supplier development.
• Lead sub‑assembly design, schedule, risk analysis (FMEA) and integration testing.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, gathering requirements and providing technical feedback.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical, Civil or Structural Engineering.
• 6+ years of experience designing mechanical structures.
• 4+ years of hands‑on stress analysis using hand calculations and finite‑element tools.
• Proven ability to manage complex assemblies from concept through production.

Required skills

• Finite‑element analysis tools: Abaqus, Ansys, FEMAP (or similar).
• CAD software (NX or equivalent).
• Thermomechanical analysis, fatigue and durability assessment.
• Bill‑of‑Materials creation and supplier sourcing.
• Risk analysis methods such as FMEA.
