Senior Mechanical Engineer IV – Communications

About the role

OTTO Engineering is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer IV to lead the mechanical design, development, and validation of ruggedized communication products such as speaker microphones, PTT devices, tactical headsets, and electromechanical assemblies. The role requires high autonomy, advanced engineering expertise, and the ability to mentor junior engineers while delivering mission‑critical solutions for military, law‑enforcement, and public‑safety customers.

Key responsibilities

• Define mechanical design concepts, system architectures, and performance specifications for rugged communication products.
• Develop complete 3D CAD layouts, sub‑assemblies, and detailed components using CREO and review designs from junior engineers.
• Perform advanced analyses including stress, tolerance stack‑ups, thermal, environmental, and statistical evaluation of test data.
• Lead cross‑functional coordination with engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, vendors, and customers to meet project schedules.
• Provide production and quality support, root‑cause analysis, design improvements, and guide MRB activities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 7 years of mechanical engineering experience with a strong track record of leading complex projects.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work in a fast‑paced, hands‑on environment.

Required skills

• Mechanical CAD – CREO (preferred).
• Expertise in plastics, elastomers, die‑cast metals, overmolding, and PCB mechanical integration.
• Strong knowledge of DFM/DFA, tolerance analysis, and ruggedization requirements (IP‑rated sealing, MIL‑STD durability, drop, vibration, thermal cycling).
• Proficiency with CAE tools for stress, thermal, and environmental modeling.
• Experience creating BOMs, ECNs, specifications, and verification reports.

• Target base salary range $110,000 – $125,000 per year.
