Senior Engineer - Mathematical Modeling and Simulation
amgen
Job description
About the role
Amgen's Combination Product Operations Digital and Data Strategies group is a process development team that builds and deploys advanced simulation technologies to improve understanding, robustness and monitoring of combination product manufacturing. This Senior Engineer role supports the team by combining physics and empirical techniques to develop rigorous finite element models (FEM) and numerical models of drug delivery devices (in-silico models), and by improving how the organization manages and uses these models to support decision making.
Key responsibilities
- Implement explicit and implicit FEM structural models, ensuring the approach and simplifications accurately represent the physical system.
- Apply kinematic, structural and tolerance analysis together with material characterization and testing to create in-silico models of device behavior during use, assembly and transport.
- Continuously improve in-silico models, manage their lifecycle and refine methods and workstreams for efficiency and trustworthiness.
- Explore new opportunities in in-silico and data-driven computational models, and model real-world scenarios with enough detail to inform decisions quickly.
- Simulate complaints and real-world issues across the product lifecycle to identify root causes.
- Lead and collaborate in a fast-paced, multi-project, cross-functional environment, delivering predictions and insights on time.
- Own the backlog of in-silico product projects, communicate scope, limitations and assumptions clearly to stakeholders, mentor other simulation experts, and document the technical basis of the models for the wider engineering and scientific community.
Required profile
- Basic qualification: doctorate; or master's degree with 2 years of engineering experience; or bachelor's degree with 4 years of engineering experience; or associate's degree with 8 years of engineering experience; or high school diploma / GED with 10 years of engineering experience.
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and work in collaborative, cross-functional teams.
- Excellent communication, presentation and technical documentation skills are highly desired.
Required skills
- Preferred: finite element modeling with a commercial platform such as SIMULIA, ANSYS, ALTAIR or COMSOL.
- Preferred: explicit FEM, non-linear structural models, contact modeling, large deformations, plasticity and hyperelasticity.
- Preferred: statistical and robustness analysis, and programming in Python and/or MATLAB; scripting tools such as Abaqus user subroutines and Tcl/Tk.
- Preferred: experience with combination products, device regulatory requirements, medical device development, design controls and process controls.
What we offer
- A competitive benefits package including retirement and savings plan, group medical, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, and flexible spending accounts.
- Discretionary annual bonus or sales-based incentive plan, stock-based long-term incentives, and time-off plans.
- Flexible work models where possible, and career development opportunities.
