Senior Director of Software Engineering

About the role

We are seeking a collaborative, innovative leader to drive technology strategy for Elsevier Health Education’s Nursing and Medical Education platforms. The Senior Director will ensure psychological safety for teams while accelerating delivery of multiple products within our Nursing Health Education suite.

Key responsibilities

• Lead multiple technology teams across Elsevier Health Education, overseeing design, development, delivery, and operation of scalable software solutions.
• Provide technical and organizational leadership, driving execution, modernization, and continuous improvement.
• Partner with product, architecture, data, quality, and business stakeholders to align technology investments with strategic priorities.
• Develop and execute multi‑year technology roadmaps, focusing on cloud modernization, platform consolidation, API‑first architecture, and AI‑enabled capabilities.
• Establish engineering standards, governance, security, scalability, and operational best practices.
• Evaluate emerging technologies such as Generative AI and machine learning to enhance learning experiences.
• Build, mentor, and lead high‑performing engineering managers and technical leaders across geographically distributed teams.
• Drive workforce planning, succession planning, organizational design, and leadership development.

Required profile

• Proven ability to build and lead high‑performing, cross‑functional engineering teams.
• Experience in healthcare, education technology, or another regulated, data‑sensitive domain.
• Strong technical judgment with depth in architecture and strategic vision.
• Experience partnering with Product and UX to deliver customer‑facing outcomes across time zones.

Required skills

• AI‑assisted development tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot.
• Cloud modernization and platform consolidation experience.
• API‑first architecture design.
• Generative AI and machine learning concepts.
• Data governance frameworks in compliance‑heavy environments.
