Senior Director of Policy and Research

About the role

The Economic Security Project is seeking a Senior Director of Policy and Research to lead its policy team in Washington D.C. This senior leadership position partners closely with the Vice President of Policy and Research to set strategy, manage budgets, and drive an ambitious agenda aimed at rebuilding economic security for working people.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee workflows that produce research, policy briefs, and events, managing multiple program managers.
• Set short‑term and long‑term priorities to maximize impact across federal and state initiatives.
• Coach, mentor, and develop program managers, fostering career growth and inclusive team culture.
• Serve on the senior leadership team, aligning policy work with campaigns, communications, and development.
• Develop and execute a three‑to‑five‑year strategy for policy research and advocacy.
• Lead commissioned research projects with external partners and ensure methodological rigor.
• Synthesize research for internal and external audiences, producing briefs, factsheets, and media‑ready content.
• Support fundraising efforts by preparing materials and meeting with funders.

Required profile

• Deep expertise in economic policy and a proven track record of strategic coalition building.
• Experience mentoring and managing high‑performing teams.
• Strong analytical abilities to navigate complex legislative environments.
• Ability to translate bold economic concepts into actionable policy wins and public campaigns.
