Senior Data Scientist

About the role

As a Senior Data Scientist at relx (Elsevier), you will lead the creation of AI solutions that accelerate scientific discovery and research intelligence. You will apply advanced machine learning, natural language processing and generative AI to make scientific knowledge more discoverable, trustworthy and actionable for researchers worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, evaluate and scale advanced ML, NLP, LLM and retrieval solutions that support scientific discovery.
• Build and optimise LLM‑powered applications such as question answering, literature summarisation, semantic search and evidence‑grounded AI experiences.
• Develop retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG) systems that connect AI models with trusted scholarly content.
• Create intelligent capabilities for search, ranking, recommendation, entity extraction, classification and decision support.
• Design evaluation frameworks measuring quality, relevance, reliability, grounding and user impact.
• Integrate knowledge graphs, ontologies, taxonomies, citations and metadata into AI workflows.
• Partner with engineering teams to monitor, optimise and continuously improve production AI systems.

Required profile
